How the route usually fits together
Vehicle registration in Slovakia is a national administrative process. Start by identifying whether the vehicle is new or used, previously registered, imported from the EU/EEA or from a third country, and whether it remains in factory-approved condition. Those facts determine which technical and tax stages apply.
The certificate of conformity is manufacturer evidence that a vehicle conforms to an approved type. It is not proof of ownership, insurance or tax payment. If the vehicle does not have an EU COC, the competent authority may request national technical data, individual approval or other evidence. Modified, rebuilt, historic and special-purpose vehicles can follow a different route.
Do not transport or dismantle a vehicle on the assumption that an online checklist guarantees acceptance. Contact the official authority, quote the complete VIN and describe the exact history. Save the response and verify whether original foreign documents must be surrendered when national documents are issued.
- Original foreign registration certificate
- Proof of ownership or purchase invoice
- Identity and address or establishment evidence
- Insurance accepted for national registration
- COC, approval data or technical evidence
- Roadworthiness or import inspection evidence
- VAT, customs and national tax evidence where applicable
- Completed application and fee payment evidence
Tax, customs and insurance
An intra-EU used vehicle transfer is not the same as importing from outside the EU customs territory. VAT treatment also differs for vehicles classed as new means of transport. National registration or road taxes may apply regardless of customs status. Confirm the calculation with the competent tax or customs authority in Slovakia before submitting the registration.
